Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission chief scientific officer AKM Fazle Kibria claimed uranium mines have been found in Sylhet and Moulvibazar districts.

He disclosed the information at a seminar titled ‘Bangladesh Primary Energy’ arranged at International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in the city on Saturday.

According to the scientist, uranium from three hundred to one thousand PPM is available in mines in the world. ‘Five hundred ppm uranium is found in Sylhet and Moulvibazar mines.’

He said, ‘We have started study to identify the area that contains uranium. It is being examined whether it will be extractable commercially’.

Mentioning large uranium mine in Meghalaya of India, northern border of Bangladesh, Kibria said that the report regarding the matter is yet to be sent to the government.

State Minster for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said, ‘Valuable mineral resources have also been found in huge char areas of the river Brahmaputra. It is being examined whether those are to be extracted commercially’.
